Question Alternator pulley - replacement has finally arrived

It has taken two weeks but for the price i paid it was worth the wait..

My engine started the annoying squeak that does not fully go away even after the engine has warmed up.. I know its not the belt or tensioners as I replaced them not so long ago. A dab of wd40 on the pulley spindle makes it a little more bearable..

So with the arrival of the replacement uprated Bosch pulley i am itching to change it but having not done one before I am curious if its a home job or if a need a special tool to remove the pulley from the alternator.

Does anybody have any experience of this job?

You need a puller - available anywhere, but you need to get the correct size. Something like this in principle, but size dependent:

How much did the pulley cost you BTW?

ah cool, i have a set of those gear pullers...

It cost me about £80 delivered for the new Bosch uprated pulley. The dealers wanted about £260 for the part..

I might be wrong about the puller - not sure, but I "think" it's only needed for the internal bearing (the ones for the shaft that goes through the alternator), it's possible the one you want to swap can just be unscrewed; but if it doesn't come off then at least you have the puller to hand.

i understand what your saying.. the pulley has about 6mm of splines on the inside on the alternator side (hope that makes sense) so that may mean having to use a puller to release it.. I will update either way once the job is done tomorrow.

Just had a read of some technical docs, it says the pulley has an anti-clockwise thread on it - you can probably confirm that from your replacement part.

    That is correct...

my concern is, undoing the retaining bolt but not turning the shaft, i am thinking its best to loosen it with the belt still on it and once replaced to tighten it when back on the shaft and the belt back on.

Shame I am away at the moment as I have access to the tools that are needed on some of them.

If you get stuck and can wait I can get them and we can do out next weekend.

well what a load of hassle that was.. i wanted to change it with the alternator still on the car but that turned out to not be possible. they are defo not the easiest of things to remove from an engine bay but i managed it only to find that the coolant pipe to my turbo was perished..

Fitting the new pulley to the alternator was a *****, i ended up taking a drive in the wife's car to go and find a workshop that was open that might have a spline tool to fit the new pulley.. I eventually found a place who did it for free but i gave them a drink anyway for the job considering what it has saved me... Then it was off to find a new coolant pipe, my local chandlers came up trumps with a pipe more than fit for purpose as usual.

In the end and despite all the fannying about its done but has left with me with another job for next weekend... its never ending with these vauxhalls but we know that..
