Default Automatic Gearbox Oil - Change Or Not Change?

My automatic gearbox has done 97,000 miles and I don't believe the oil has been changed.

The box is fine and there are no problems.

I have heard that if there isn't a problem you shouldn't change the oil.

If I was to change it I would get an Automatic Gearbox Specialist to change it as when I did it before it caused the box to get worse.

The owners manual doesn't give any advice on when or if to change it.

    Thanks for any advice.

If Af40 The dip stick is on the drain bung . There is a small grub screw under neath. Run upto temp, leave it running and remove it oil grub screw not the full bung. Oil will leak out refit screw when just dripping. Switch off engine and top up 0.5 oil.

My 1st gear moans a little when car is hot and it has only done 37k

My local Vx garage have told me the same thing time and time again. It's unlike them to turn down work when it's offered to them.

My 2.2 direct auto is on 78,000 miles now and the autobox is still fine - touch wood.

If it's never been changed before (at 100k), don't change it! There have been reports of failed gearboxes shortly after an oil change.
I drove my mate's Signum 2.2DTi when he first got it. The box was smooth as silk at 100k in fact it was smoother than our reconditioned one (20k) and he said he was going to change the oil just to be on the safe side...3 months later the gearbox failed, lost all drive.

What I would do is regularly check the oil, burnt smell or a weird colour indicate problems...
