    Default coolant

hi my 2.0 dti on a 53 plate has had secoundhand engine in . i have had it back for a week and it keeps needing to be top up with coolant . so far just over 1ltr . the garage said its because the engine and heater matrix had been drain and it might have air in it . my question is how much air could there be trap and how do i get it out quicker or what else could it be ?. the engine does'nt smoke and i can't smell oil in the coolant and the oil cap is clean. plus there is no sign of a leak .

Surely if they were a half decent garage they'd have checked it didn't have an air lock.

Get the garage to perform a pressure test

There should be no air trapped in the system.

That's why you have a header tank. It's for any air in the system to go to.

Sounds like they're talking out their backside. System needs pressure testing and a sniff test carried out on the coolant for hydrocarbons.

I agree it can be hard to bleed all the air out. But to say its ok is crap.

Try turning your heater to full an fans off.

Remove expansion bottle lid. An run car up to temp.
Leave it like that for few mins an turn fans on full.

This should remove any air from matrix

if the head gasket has gone would there be white smoke from the exhaust especally if it was drinking just over a 1ltr for 150 miles. because i have got no sign of it the engine does'nt smoke at all. i have smelt the water and it just smell like stale water . i have just unclip the left hand hose from the heater matix to make sure water was there and kept topping the expansion bottle up till i saw pink coolant coming out 4 ltrs . then recliped it and spent a hour trying to get the fan to kick in reving like it says in the haynes book . the temp went up to 94 but no fan the it kept dropping back down to 88-90 but no fan kick in ? and the coolant level drop . yet i can't see any leaks . i have run out of idea's going to see my local garage to see if they will do a pressure test . does anyone have any other idea's what it could be

Try it again an try pumping bottom rad hose at same time.

Can be a ball ache to bleed sometimes.

You may have to take it for a drive to get the fan to kick hot air out. I had an Astra that a just couldn't get hot air to come out on interior. When was on the ramp. But took for short drive an was roasting hot. An worked perfect after that
