sounds like what i had going on with mine, took it in to local garage diagnosed as clutch release bearing however the nosie got worse and ended up with new clutch adn the dreaded dual mass fly wheel was on the limts of tollerance, so id prepare for the worse just incase £850 lighter i was.
mines also a 1.9cdti 56 plate 65000 on the clock

I'm going to jack the full front end up tomorrow and get someone to rev it while in gear and i will have a look under the bonnet see if i can pinpoint where its coming from.

My we brother thinks its the drive shaft or around there.

mine isnt tapping its making a rubbing noise as if the disk gard is rubbing the brake disk tbh it sounds more like a pipe is leeking and blowing air out i will try get it on my iphone while i take the kids to school if i open the window i cant really hear it only when the window is up.

Edit: meant to say now and then it makes a we sound as if theres a dump valve but not as loud when i let the accelerator go to change gear.
