Exclamation Turbo Type, Position & Ease of Replacement - Vectra 1.9 120 54

    Hey all,
the time has come where I think my turbo is finally on its last legs.

When I enter the turbo range I get a high pitched whistle sound, like a siren and I think it is starting to loose power. Very subtly it seems as other people who I rarely drive around, have noticed its lack of pulling power.

I have done a number of jobs myself (with heavy guidance) -
    EGR Valve
    Radiator
    Intercooler
    Boost Pipes
    Throttle body etc etc...

But the turbo looks like a much bigger job! Also I can physically see all of these areas of the engine, on the 120 the turbo is part of the Manifold so I am a little lost as to actually where it is!

    1) Where the hell is the turbo in the 120 1.9 vectra?

    2) What turbo will my car actually have if I opt to purchase a new one?
    This page:
    http://www.vauxhall-turbochargers.co...ra_Turbos.html
have 4 turbos for the 120bhp model like mine. Anyone with any info would be great.

    3) ease of replacement?

How difficult is this job going to be? I can imaging it being insanely fiddley as I can't even see the turbo under /over my car!. I have a set of ramps and tools, will it be enough to do a replacement? I have a haynes manual but it practically ignores the 120 model and gives more info on the manifold removal.

    1)
Turbo is under the silvery heatshield in front of the engine (on mine it has a hand symbol on it). Trace the intake pipe out of the airbox on the left, diagonally forward and right(as viewed looking at the front of the car). As it connects with the solid plastic pipe, it then disappears almost straight down and you can *JUST* make out the jubilee holding it onto the Turbo intake. It's possibly more visible from under the car with the undertray removed.

    2)
Depending on the age of your car and judging by the list, engine references and output figures I'd say ours is the
    1.9L D
    Z19DTH
    2006-
    GT1749MV
    Garrett
    767835-0001
    55205474
    119 bhp

It has the correct power output, but the incorrect engine code, I believe the 1.9 8v 120bhp is called the Z19DT, NOT Z19DTH.

Should still be Z19DT and it's the same turbo that's fitted to all the 1.9s on the list, 120s & 150s, CDTIs or JTDs 2004 onwards: GT1749MV

ok, finally got the bad boy on ramps and got the bumper off to take a proper look. I had a play with it
1- Disconnected the vac pump and the whine tapered off. it practically disappeared but you could still hear the faint whine. It no longer got louder when revving.
2- The whining sound does come from the turbo, its a far too mechanical sound to be a bad pipe/clip.
3- replacing it looks like a mammoth task.

To do the replacement/recon of it. I need to actually get to the turbo, so probably going to require intercooler, radiator, bumper, aircon off. this will give access to the actual turbo and heat shield. Then its a case of disconnecting everything, watching for oil feeds and remove it from the manifold. get it to a repair shop and get it reconditioned. might as well do an oil change while there - then get it back on. ... sounds like fun!

Anyone have any experience and anything I should be weary of?

Also, on a side note - does anyone know of a good place to have it recond

Forgot to say to undo the dipstick as it gets in the way when removing the heatshield (well it does on the 150). Also check the intercooler for leaks because if the turbo has been leaking oil internally it would put it into the intercooler and cause it to swell up and burst.
