Default Not starting..... Possible Starting Motor

Just went out to my 2.0 dti Signum, turned the key and the car wouldn't turn over.

When the key is turned, you can hear a clunk, which I presume is the solenoid engaging the starting motor, the display dims, but the starter doesn't spin.

I read on another thread that the fault was the battery, but everything else is working fine and normally if the battery is low, the starting motor will still turn, but slowly.

    Any thoughts?

Just went out to the car to see if I could push it out the drive to bump-start it. Before that I thought I would try turning the key again, first time it clunked, the second time the starting motor turned over and it started fine??? I know my battery is a bit tired, but if it started, it can't be a faulty battery....can it?

Could the starting motor be sticking?

<edit> Critch, the headlights were bright, and all the car electrics are working fine. I did try the rocking thing earlier, but that didn't work. It's strange why it just worked for me a minute ago though!!!

Possibly sticky starter. Or maybe high resistance in cable not allowing complete current flow.

Woukd start with fresh batt/ charge batt

Get your battery professionally load tested and tke the starter motor out and clean it.

I 'drop' tested the battery and it is fine. The car fired up first turn this evening after sitting there all day on the drive. The cables all look fine and connections are tight. I have a feeling the starter motor could be faulty as a few months ago I had the injector seals leaking, and I had to crank it over for 3 or 4 minutes to get the car to start. I did this for a couple of days until I got them fixed. I remember smelling a hot burning smell, which may have been the brushes or winding of the motor. Anyway, I managed to order a new motor today for £85 +vat from a local supplier, so I'll stick that in and see what happens

Changed the starting motor last night, what a pain to get too. Had to take off the turbo heat shield, starting motor heat shield, loosen the wiring loom to get to the starting motor rear support and removed from the top. Anyway, it turns over a lot quicker now and starts well. The old one smelt a bit burnt, so at least I know now I have a good few years in this new starter
