    Default Vectra C DTI missing solenoid valve? (EGR/Swirl flaps)

    My 2002 vectra C 2.0 DTI starts and pulls very well however i ocasionally get the spanner light for a few seconds/mins when on the motorway cruising, normally it then goes and full power returns. I also have an excessive engine knock/rattle when under any kind of load, mainly noticeable at low revs.......

    This evening i was pondering if maybe the swirl flaps were not functioning so started to look at the solenoid valve that controls it (above rad on pass side). all looked ok in terms of connections but what i did notice was a spare electrical plug next to this solenoid. am i correct in saying there should be TWO solenoids here, one for Swirl flap operation and one for EGR operation??? if so it seems I dont have one at all for my EGR and it looks as if it may of been removed?????

    If this is the case i assume the excessive knock/pinking noise and random Spanner light could be related to this??? Or am i wrong and the EGR on this engine is totally electronically controlled???

    Mine only has one solenoid m8 and it runs OK.If i were you i'd get the code read and take it from there.

    For the spanner light, We could speculate til the cows come home without a fault code unfortunately, as the light covers a vast range of errors

    EGR on the Vec C DTI engines are electronically actuated (not vacuum controlled like the Vec B's), so doesn't need another solenoid.

    ah fair enough that explains the lack of solenoid, i assume the additional plug that is ther enext to the one exisiting solenoid is due to a standard wiring loom being used across the range???

    Il clean EGR and swirl flaps/inlet this weekend and report back. runs very well, pulls very strongly with no smoking at all.

    There can be 1 or 2 solenoids above the radiator. All DTi's have one there for the inlet manifold switchover, but not all have the air cut-off valve in the upper part of the inlet manifold. If you don't have this (which cuts off the air when the engine stops to help prevent run-on) then you won't have the solenoid to control it.

    Also check the vacuum pipes to see if you can see a connector with no pipe attached or a pipe with nothing on the end of it.
