Mountain Bike or Road Bike

There is a charity event happening with work that I fancy doing , 20 / 60 / 100 km bike ride

I fancy the 60 or 100 , however I don't have a bike lol

What would you suggest , currently I am doing about 20-25km a day at the gym , I have 7 weeks to train for this , it's gonna be for Naomi House

Any advice is appreciated , what bike should go for , don't want to spend hundreds so what's out there

I have a pretty decent mountain bike, but due to the fact most of my riding is purely for pleasure which entails tow paths, cycle paths, country lanes etc, i took off the chunky tyres and put hybrids on... The differnce it made in effort was tremendous.

So, if you do go the mountain bike route consider hybrid or proper road tyres.

It depends what gearing you need - i.e. how fast you'll be riding and how steep the inclines will be. An in-shape rider will be able to go a lot faster on the flats on a road bike than a mountain bike.

I don't know the route so hard to say whether what the route is , I was looking at a road bike but i know i will prob want to go runs with the boy so a mountain bike might be better , there are a few with £££'s off in halfords so may look at them

What aidi said just change over to road tyres when you actually do the ride but train on the mountain bike tyres you will be surprised at the difference

I have a Claud butler mountain bike very light disk brakes its brilliant don't buy a cheap one as there heavy spend a bit extra and get a good one mate well worth it

Hi mate i bike to work most days now its alot harder for me as im using a full on downhill bike see pic

But im buying this giant as i can get it for £320 alot better make 10 year guarantee on the frame

I am currently commuting to work on a Specialized Mountain bike on 1.5 Semi Slicks. Does the job quite well but the the main issue is I run out of gears pretty quickly. I am doing 75% of my route to work in top gear, sure you will pretty much know it(Livi, Mid Calder, East Calder, A71, Edinburgh). One of the best Road bikes, for the Money, out there at the moment is Decathlons Triban 3 . Lightweight Aluminium frame with a full carbon front fork and Shimano group set. I have read a few reviews about this bike and no one can figure out how they can sell it so cheaply, its easily out doing bikes that cost 2 and 3 times more.
BTW get out the gym and get on the road as soon as possible, even if you need to borrow a bike. Its a completely different animal. Gradients, wind, rain, idiot drivers, chaffing, ring sting all make everything a lot harder than any gym work. Remember you will also need other things too, a helmet, bright jacket, cycling shorts, gloves are a great addition. If you are planning to do the 100k's a camel back is going to be an essential too, handy for carrying your spares and food etc too. Also to bare in mind is that 100k's is about 65miles, so your going to be in the saddle for about 4-5 hours, easy for the pro's but not much fun if you really don't know what to expect. I have done Pedal for Scotland the last 2 years(50 miles) and it was relatively easy but still took me 3 1/2 hours, mind you both years I did no training for it.
