Default New House - Existing Telephone Line

    Good Evening my learned friends..

Just wondering if anyone can answer the following question...

My wife and I are due to complete on our new house (well new to us) very soon.

The property has a telephone already and we know the number - and its currently active.

We are assuming the current owners will have it disconnected - however if we have it re-connected whilst the line is still live (but not able to make calls) we wont have to pay the £130 for re-activation/new line etc.

What we really want to know, is will a new number be given to the line, or will we get back the same number?

I am sure someone out there has been through the exact same process, so any info would be appreciated.

    Rgds

You can keep that number, get a new number, or transfer your existing number

Magic.. Don't want to keep the old number - we want to start all from fresh. Let the battle commence with BT - You know its going to be epic before you even pick up a phone!

You are correct as regards the fee. A fee is only payable if the line has been physically disconnected or if a new line needs to be provided. This costs £40 instead of the usual £130 if you order online and is added automatically if you need it. If you order online, the system can tell if there is a line at the property that can be reused the same as if you call 1550. As the line is currently live you won't need it re-connecting (or a new line providing), and you'll notice that the line will have 'soft dialtone' on it once the cease that the previous account holder put on it has come into effect. This indicates that the line is already reconnected and a new account can be set up without any re-connection or installation charge.

As standard, you will be given a new number. This is usually a good thing as it means you get a clean break and won't get loads of calls for the previous occupants. Transfer of your existing number is only possible if the phone line at your existing house is provided on the same part of the same exchange as the line at your new house. If you want to keep your existing number and this condition doesn't apply then you'll have to get something like a network call forward, or a recorded message to say that the number has changed.
