Default Insurance renewal with recent SP30 speeding fine

Hi Looking for a bit of advice reference insurance renewal.

    After around 28 years of driving (I'm 46) I have received my first speeding fine – it’s a SP30. Yip, stupid .............

I’ve got full no claims (says over 9 years on policy, but I think it is nearer 13 with the current company Direct Line and I joined them with about 5 or 7 years no-claims) - I have never made a claim although I have been involved in two” no fault” events in the last 3 years (both someone else damaging my back bumper) that I advised the my insurance about.

Currently insuring an 03 plate GSi with Direct Line and renewal quote was £447.32 + £67.84 (to protect no-claims), just phoned to mention the recent speeding conviction and they have reviewed the renewal and the basic premium (excluding protecting no claims) is now almost £200 more.

Is this a reasonable hike for a blip in my driving career – this premium will likely apply for the 5 years.

Only mod to car is stainless steel CAT back exhaust

Just wondering if anyone has experienced the same and what they did when it came to renewing their insurance.

That seems a lot to pay even before your SP30. I'm 32 with an 03 plate Vectra GSi and I pay around £450 full comp with 6 years NCB and currently (touch wood) clean license. Try phoning round. SP30 shouldn't make any difference.

Thanks for the feedback all, I was a bit shell-shocked when the guy said what the increase would be based on your comments it has given me the push to look further (I have been so used to being with the same company, I felt the renewals were getting a bit dear but just went down the easy route – should have shopped around ages ago).

I heard the fine would not make much of a difference, was shocked at the increase. It actually felt like one of the budget airlines, as soon as you give them a reason (excess baggage, booking a seat, online check-in etc.) the price gets ramped up.

Time to move on and find a better company – will keep you updated on progress.

Thanks again all for your words of wisdom.

Bye the way – it was 41 in a 30, the police marksman was actually standing at the change from 30 to 40 between Greenock and Port Glasgow, I changed my speed too early. Bang to rights but damn annoying.

    Different insurers have different criteria
Direct Line (assuming that is your current insurer) do not like any endorsements
Just start looking for new quotes and compare on a like for like basis

I was always under the impression 3 points for SP30 makes no difference, however, my partner has 3 points for an SP30 and it increased my premium by £45.

I was always under the impression an SP30 alone is not a major financial issue on your policy, however Moneysupermarket etc is by far the best place for ensuring the prices are competitive then call a few brokers like Chris Knott and take it from there.
