Default Oil can light with wavey lines

    Hey all,

Got this light on my dash on the way to work this morning...

Car details: 2004 1.8 LS Z(X)18XE engine with 96K on the clock give or take. Last oil change comming up on a year ago (16K miles ago)

I am assuming it means the oil is low (which is wiered as I checked it a few weeks ago and it was about half way between the lines in the dipstick when cold).... I am due an oil change anyway.

So I will check this tonight and see if it needs topping up and top it up as appropriate.

Now first my questions is... Can I drive it home to fill it up?

I have a journey of about 30 miles of which 25 of them are motorway. I only drove about 4 miles this mroning when then light came on so I am not worried about that. So would 34 / 35 miles of driving with this light on be safe (I will drive it carefully without excessive reving etc).

My second question is... If the oil level is ok is this likley to be a sensor issue and if so how do I fix it?

I changed the oil sensor on a 1.4 tigra years agio (dead easy to be honest). Is it just the same for the Vectra?

Finaly, is there anything else you all think I should check / do?

If it's just below minimum on the dipstick when cold, then I would say it's fine to drive home. But if the dipstick is dry, I'd walk or get a lift to somewhere and buy a litre of oil to top it up first.

Depends on the production date of the handbook.

But it will be somewhere near page 37 if it's not actually on that page.

Lol... yep... found the right page on the PDF version I have... Defo the oil level.

Bit worried about this as if the oil has droped significatly and their is no leak then it must have gone / been consumed else where... So time to check the coolant reserve tank me thinks.

If it's just the oil sensor then that seems straight forward enough although I assume I need to change the oil as part of this process?

The sensor is very expencive at £60'ish is it not. The Tigra 1.4 one i bough before was under £10.00

If you have already checked the oil level when the light appeared, then clearly it is just the sensor that has failed
Oil level and pressure sensors fail quite often, due to the extremes they deal with
Thankfully most are placed so that they are relatively easy to access and change

£60 is not expensive for a sensor, there are many that are in excess of £100
Welcome to the costs of running a larger car!

First off I would recheck the level. You are meant to check the oil weekly but few of us do that. If its still showing 1/2 way between the lines I would top it up with 12 L. (It is 1L between the lines)
If the light does not go off then its faulty, if it does go off then it means you have a good sensor.

Peter Griffin: Ah, c'mon, Lois, isn't 'bribe' just another word for 'love'?

ok, wee update... Went out to the car at lunch there and checked the levels. The oil is just above the lower level on the dipstick. I started the car and the light came on but then went out within seconds of starting. There is no oil, scum etc in the header tank and the oil cap on the block is scum / cream free.

So fingers crossed it's just the oil which has run low. The car has been doing allot more miles recently at higher speeds than normal so this may be part of the reasons for the oil loss.... i hope anyway.

So will gingerly take it home tonight and top it right up.

Is 10/40w oil ok to use or should I be using 5/40w oil?
