Default Connect USB cable to car battery without power socket.

    Hi all
I don't want to use the actual power socket itself, but want to connect a short iPhone 4 data cable to it, and create a charging port in the arm compartment. So both the front and rear sockets are free for other mischievous uses!

    Can this be done..?

No problem - take the car charger apart (this steps the voltage down from 12V to 5V and filters noise from it), and solder a wire to the point on the pcb that goes to the cig lighter centre connector. Connect this to the centre terminal on the back of the cig lighter socket. Take a wire from the pcb where it goes to the plug outer terminal and run this to the cig lighter outer terminals on the car.

Or am I missing something in what you're trying to do?

USB = 5V. Car electrics = 12V. Connect the USB lead directly to the car electrics and you'll fry your iPhone. Need to adapt a car charger.
