    confused "simples"

Where did this popular variant of "simple" come from and how did it make its way into the english vocabulary?

Appears to be used in a condescending manner to answer an obvious question, but not sure if that's right

Almost certainly from the "compare the market" and "compare the meerkat" adverts on TV.
Nothing wrong with it, and if it adds another phrase in the English language then so be it. Things change all the time, not always for the better, but this is one that I find slightly amusing and of no real harm to anyone.

ah, just wondered what it was all about. thought it was an internet buzzword like "lol" "pmsl" etc. -- until i heard someone say it recently with what sounded like an irish accent.
in the dictionary now too http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010...ins-dictionary

there may be a wrong ( joking ) foreign interpretation of simple .

As in a foreigner getting the words wrong .

What accent are the meerkats using ? is it Russian ?

It's probably the populist English idea of an Eastern European accent of some kind. I doubt it has any real connection with any specific accent, but as it's designed to sell an insurance comparison website it's working quite well for them!

    I like it anyway.

I find it REALLY REALLY annoying tbh. Can't people talk properly?? Why feel they have to act like a lemming and try to be funny etc by copying a p*xy advert catchphrase thats not even a real word. Rant over...
