Default Windscreen Replacemet, Would This Work?

    Hi,

As you may or may not know, I work for RAC Autowindscreens, so its obviouslty just my luck going to see family on boxing day, I had a stone flicked up from the car in front and cracked my screen.

What I would like to know is, can I fit a heat reflective, I know I physically can, but what I am not sure about is if it will affect my Air Con?

I know when we replace screens we can only fit like for like, especially on Renaults as on the newer ones, all Renaults with AirCon have a heat reflective screen, and if we were to fit a different one, the air con or climate control won't function properly.

I can get the screen, and fit it, I just want to know if it would cause problems with my A/C, and if so, is there a way around it?

    Regards,

    Chris Schild

The vecs with climate control have a little sensor in the little grill on the dash. This sensor adjusts the temp in the car according to if the car is in shade or direct sunlight (I might be wrong on this but am sure its what its for). So as yours has probably only got A/C like mine, and does not have this feature, I cant see and difficulties in fitting a heat reflective screen.

Thats what I thought, climate control sets the temperature, air con only conditions the air through the fans in the same way as normal air vents, except its conditioned!

    cheers,

i'll think i'll order the screen up tomorrow~!

Yep, that's exactly what it's for. If it detects that sun is shining on one side of the car, it will compensate with the CC on that side.

I would think so too. If it had the CC and the sensor, it might need some sort of recalibrating as the sensor would be picking up less sunlight falling on it and wouldn't then compensate, yet you'd still be getting the sun hitting you through your side window and making you hotter. Not an issue with AC.

The ammount of light through the screen is the same but it blocks uv and heat , the sensor measures light so wont be affected .

Without going off topic too much, the sensor measures infra-red - that's why the dome is coloured that red colour. Compare it to the little window on a remote control. If it simply measured light it would have a clear or translucent cover over the sensor. The heat you feel from the sun is infra-red, and a heat reflecting screen will reflect some of this heat, i.e. infra-red, so less infra-red would fall on the sensor.

The other thing to watch out for is if you have a Tom Tom/Speed camera detector or other device that picks up GPS and sits under your windscreen (without an attached external antenna) it may stop working with a heat reflective windshield fitted since they also do a good job at blocking GPS signals too.

Old man had this problem but instead of getting an external antenna he got one that went on his parcel shelf.
