Default 1.8 Petrol - Fuel Filter Replacement

After a few unsuccessful attempts at removing the fuel hose connections, using a variety of tools, I think I've now made something that will work by modifying an old pair of 6" slip-joint pliers. I even bought a Draper '3 Piece Set of Fuel Disconnection Pliers' (Stock No. 40106) but couldn't work out how the GM tool was supposed to fit this particular connector. There were no instructions supplied apart from advising the user to consult the manufacturer's or Haynes manuals.

If I can disconnect the hoses, how is the filter removed?

I can't work out how it's held in place. The Haynes manual says 'Lift the retaining clip and push the filter forwards, out of the mounting bracket.' Is this the long part of the clip that points forward? From what I could see, the mounting looks like a one-part piece of plastic wrapped around the filter.

Any help would be much appreciated.
