Default Second car... What would you have?

I was talking to the wife yesterday and it's looking quite likely that we're going to be moving to a more central location with one of us commuting up and down the M1, in the near future. This obviously brings up the question of needing a second car and who would drive what. We decided that whichever end of the M1 we end up at, the one who does the big commute will be using the Vectra (diesel economy) and the other getting a run-about, and that got me thinking... Now we're both late twenties/early thirties, we seem to have got past the years of scary insurance premiums so this 'run-about' wouldn't necessarily need to be a 1.1 Corsa etc... and could actually be a bit of a play thing!?!.. My first thought was Astra VXR or Golf GTI but then I noticed that Porsche Boxters aren't too badly priced on the 2nd/3rd hand market! (although I'm not sure I'd like to finance the maintenance).

I know many of you will already have 2 or 3 vehicles in the household so wondered what you've got/would consider a good combination of plaything and run-about car?...

As fun as an Evo/Skyline sounds, I think they sort of defeat the point of a run-about.... Perhaps something with a Type R badge could be good for a giggle? I do really like the Astra VXR's especially in arden blue!..

True. If I go down the classic route it'd have to be an S1 mk1 Golf GTI though.
