Default Turbo rebuild kits - 1.9CDTi

    Afternoon all.

The turbo in the Vectra is really starting to whine now and it's not really going away as much when it's hot like it used to. Blows enough oil on a cold start to make the engine judder a bit too. After a bit of research I've found a company that offers a rebuild kit for the turbo for £50. Has anyone used them before? Is this something that a normal garage can fit too? Trying to keep costs down and can't afford an exchange turbo and fitting. Not got the tools or knowledge to do it myself either.

    Cheers

Done a bit of digging and it is a genuine Garrett rebuild kit, not cheap aftermarket parts. Can't be that bad then?

The problem is once rebuilt you cant balance the assembly without a special rig, the shaft will likely have wear on it as well as the bearings, and the compressor and turbine blades will almost certainly have a little damage. These things spin at 100,000 + RPM so really have to be spot on.

I helped a friend replace a problem turbo on a Focus TDCI last year and he sourced a brand new turbo 'cartridge' ie, the main moving parts assembly less the turbine and compressor housings which you take off your old one. £200 if I recall correctly.

Not sure if this is commonly available for all turbo types though.
