    Default Z18XE using oil

As some of you maybe aware as you have already offered advice, my brother purchased a 55 (facelift) Vectra C 1.8 SRI with only 50k on it mid june and has had quite a few issues with it since.

He came up to visit for the past couple of weeks and while the car was here, it had a new radiator fitted as it was losing a lot of coolant and also had a new rocker cover gasket fitted as it had a major oil leak.

Before this, the dealer had the car back with him to fix a knocking, the oil leak, water leak in boot, etc. He had the car for 2 WEEKS and managed to fix the water leak only. We found a McDonalds receipt in the car while it was supposed to be being repaired! This is another storey though and one I imagine that will be pursued by my brother.

On his journey back home the car ran fine but when he got home, approx 280 mile joiurney the car had used quite a lot of oil. Before he set off the car had the maximum amount of oil but when home, it was barely registering on the dipstick. There are no oil leaks as they have been fixed, what else could it be as I followed him a couple of time and there didn't appear to be any blue smoke.

Sorry its a bit long winded but I want to get him the best advice possible and I know that this site has never let me down.

Is there service history with the car? New rad and using a lt of oil in 280 miles and at only 50k doesnt sound right to me? TBH I think I would have the ECU read to confirm the mileage first, not 100% sure if opcom can do this or only tech2. I have read some z18xe's can chew up their rings but thats more on much much higher mileage cars, and most likely those that have been ignored regular oil and filter changes.

    thanks for the replies

The car does have service history and the milage does seem to check out with the VOSA website. He has also had the car hooked upto opcom and the milage does seem to tally so I think that is ok.

So it sounds likely that its the piston rings. The only thing is there isn't any smoke when the car is driven so could is still be this?

Thinking about it, when the car is started from cold and driven until there is a bit of warmth in the engine it does produce blue smoke. Also, the exhaust tip was clean before he set off home but was black when he arrived..... Could this be the rings and stem seals?

The dealer, unbelievabley, actually said to my brother "You have to remember that it is a 55 plate car when all is said and done"......

The cat does a good job a hiding a large amount of smoke.

Have a compression am leak down test performed.

What grade oil is he using as he may get away with increasing the thinking
    ie from 5w30 to 10w40

I know when he came up we topped it up with 10 40 but not sure whats been in it before.

I think a compression is the way to go as you say, should show what the problems are. I'll let him know.

The only worry is that the dealer is being very awkward with him and I can see it being a long drawn out process, plus you don't know what standard of work they would do to the car

I would whip the plugs out for a look, although not exactly very scientific if its using as much oil as that id expect to find some pretty oily plugs.
