    Default Spare wheel

Is it possible to swop space saver spare for a standard 16 inch steel as it will be close to my sri 17s. I want no loss of boot space for definate, as it wasn't pleasant drive home down m6 earlier after puncture in the rain. Osf aswell so scary to change.
    Cheers guys

If you get the right tyre for it (i.e. a higher side wall profile) then it will be the same diameter as your 17"s

Lots of cars have a different spare size to the main tyres - eg, 15" spare as opposed to 16" on the car. End of the day it's the tyre that governs the overall diameter.

Remember though, a 16" wheel will still be classed a temporary spare when used with the other three 17" wheels.

Ideally you should be looking for a 17" wheel.

Poxy space savers!! I only used mine once, it looked like I'd replaced one of my wheels with a f***ing Jaffa-Cake!! The car was tipping so badly on that corner I thought it was gonna fall over and I think it actually drove worse than it did with the flat tyre on. I replaced the spare straight away with another 16" rim which does raise the boot carpet by about 1/2" but it's hardly noticeable.

My car has 16 inch wheels, the tyres are 215/55 x 16, whch should give you almost the same rolling radius.

Did you fit it to the front or rear?

Best practice is to put the SS on the rear, which means if you've got a front flat, you have to take one of the rears off and put on the front, then put the SS on the rear. But if you've only got a couple of miles to drive to the nearest tyre garage, then it won't matter providing you drive carefully.

Good point Dave, I put it straight on the front but it was in the middle of a downpour and didn't want to mess about changing 2 wheels if I could help it.

Why do they call it a 'Space Saver' anyway? It saves no space at all !! A weight saver (or a cost saver from a Vx perspective) perhaps, but with the plastic filler under it in the well, it doesn't give you any more real space.
However, not a problem for me as those of you who remember my GSi alloy refurb thread a while back will know.... 17in GSi alloy fits perfectly in the spare well with no disturbance to the carpet height.
