Default Power steering pump packed in!

Went out in the car this AM to nip to the shops, i heard a funny noise from the front drivers side. Steering was ok but when i was turning the steering wheel it was getting noisier. I assumed the reservoir was getting low, bought some fluid and whipped off the bumper to check. Reservoir was full(bugg3r!) so was turning the wheel to make sure it was the pump that was noisy when i lost all power steering totally - started the car and its caput!

Phoned VX to get a price for a new pump, £750 + VAT near fell off ma effing seat when he quoted me this..

I have been looking on ebay at second hand pumps - now do these need tech 2'd into the car or can i just fit it and smile? The reason for asking is, i'm 70 miles away from my dealer so if it needs tech 2'd that is a bit far to travel without power steering, and dear knows what damage i would cause doing this in the first place!!

    So advice please guys..

Just been speaking to these guys - this is the pump i require and it a damn sight cheaper than VX. Anyone know how much companies charge for reconing the original units?

Have you had a look at http://www.carparts4less.co.uk/power-steering-pump sister company of ECP but usually a lot cheaper and have a further 5% off at moment
The one at the bottom has same part number as the one you put up

I ordered a load of filters from them to service three cars on Thursday afternoon at 4pm - they were delivered the following day at 10am - very good service!

have you checked the alternator voltage fella as the power steering takes a hell of alot of current and if theres not enough juice the steering is one of the things tha stops working

Na i haven't buddy - i was actually under the car when the pump gave way, it was noisy then stopped mid-turn. TBH it sounded like a mechanical noise rather than a pump giving way under less load BUT thats not to say thats what it is, just a DIY guess. No other warning lights have came up to suggest anything other than pump failure, so thats what's leading me to the pump..?

So does anyone know if the pump is a straight swap, or does it require activation via tech2?

Steven the power steering pump has an ECU and so will require to be Tech 2'd in at some point however the mechanical part should work straight off just will need to be added to the system so the CIM etc can talk to it are you sure its not just the electrical 60 amp connections need cleaning might be worth a shot first bud.

Thanks for the help Paul. Are the 60 amp connectors the plugs onto the actual unit? I'm about to go out and test the alternator, and disconnect the battery for a while - also i may as well check the fuses too..

    Thanks again buddy..
