    Default WTD and night shift

I am looking for some opinions and peoples previous / current experience of night shifts

    The WTD states:
A minimum Daily Rest period of 11 hours uninterrupted rest between finishing your job and starting the next day
The minimum period between shifts must be no less than the above

The night shifts we operate are typically :
    18:00 to 06:00
    22:00 to 06:00
    22:00 to 08:00

My understanding of the above is that the next shift must be no less than 11 hours later, thus respectively :
    17:00 onwards (day two)
    17:00 onwards (day two)
19:00 onwards (day two), thus when working this shift cannot perform the 18:00 shift

One of our employees has suggested it actually means there must be a full day between shifts (ie between ending the shift and starting the next day)
    So for example
    Mon 18:00, Wed 11:00
    Mon 22:00, Wed 11:00
    Mon 22:00, Wed 11:00

This is the first I have been made aware of this, and have seen many, many people work back-to-back night shifts

    Comments welcome

We normally work on 12 hrs rest and a shift is to be no more that 12 hours, unless there is an emergency and a risk assessment has been carried out.

Yes the 11 hour rule is what you go by, 11 hours, minimum, off from the end of one shift to the start of the next. We used to work Tuesday night to Tuesday morning, week on week off(as your also supposed to allow a minimum of 2 days off a week), but as we are lucky to be exempt from the WTD we now do Monday night to Monday morning, week on week off.

As said its 11 hours which is why Nurse's shifts tend to be 13 hours long.

Looks like this employee is just simply trying to exploit this wording then (probably for their own personal benefit)
They had suggested the following (night shift) working pattern in order to meet the WTD :
    Sunday 22:00 - 06:00
    Tuesday 22:00 - 06:00
    Thursday 22:00 - 06:00
    Saturday 22:00 - 06:00
    Monday 22:00 - 06:00
    and so on

I had my doubts about this, as back-to-back shifts (with 11 hour rest) have never been an issue and none of our employees who are members of a union had raised this in the last few years

Looks like I will need to discuss the matter further to find out what the real issue is

Just had a confirmation from the person responsible for our schedules (currently on holiday, hence why I am dealing with this)
We operate a maximum 12 hour shift redundancy system, although most shifts are 4, 6, or 8 hours
This means if someone doesn't turn up then we can ask them to stay on for up to a further 1 hour until we find a replacement for the incoming shift, after which the Shift Supervisor will then take over in their place

    We also have a regional on-call assistant (12 hours sessions; 06:00 to 18:00 / 18:00 to 06:00)
I've never been happy with this role, but it is essential
This person could be awake from 07:00, then get a phone call at 17:30 to advise they were required for a shift
Obviously they are paid a retainer (for being on-call) plus the shift supplement if required to cover a shift
Thankfully it is not often required, it is a last resort (with guidelines for use)

If I had my choice we would operate 12 hour night shifts, but to be honest most of the basic grade staff are wimps and so have elected for 8 and/or 10 hour shifts
We do have some people that have elected for 12 hour night shifts, and reap the benefits that come with that, the biggest being the additional day off for the same number of equivalent hours (3 nights of 12 hours versus 2 nights of 8 hours and 2 nights of 10 hours)
