    Default expansion tank

    on my expansion tank 1.9cdti there is a pipe sticking out the back behind the cap

    is there supposed to be a hose on it? as i seem to either be using a hell of alot of water or im loosing it through there

    It's supposed to be there - if someone opens the cap whilst the coolant is too hot, it'll pour out of that pipe before it reaches their hand.

    pressure relief outlet i believe, if the water gets too pressurised/hot then it melts the end and flows out (i think), similar to how a wax cork works in a shower..

    The pressure relief is built into the cap, when the pressure is to high it will force the spring in the cap up and then flow out of the pipe. If you overfill the coolant this is where it goes out
