Does anyone think as daft as It may sound, could I bridge the very small hole by stapling the ribbon then taping behind and using conductive paint then taping this side?Cheers Dan

Ribbon cables are normally soldered on or have a special connector on the ends of them that clip onto the pcb. I think if you use a staple, you might make another break in the cable as the wires are very thin.

I would suggest a new cable.

Assuming you've done what I think you may have done if you're talking about the ribbon cables on the dashboard clocks (which are extremely sensitive to hot soldering irons being even close to them and are not soldered and do not have plugs on them). I can tell you that having looked around about this ages ago, there are companies out there which will replace them for you, but it takes very specialist kit and they tend to charge a small fortune for it.

The ribbons are conductive plastic there is no metal in them at all (hence why they just melt when they get too hot) and they are heat bonded on with a special conductive heated glue.

I stuffed one of the ribbons on my dash once and it was cheaper to buy a new set of clocks in the long run...
