Default hollow thumping noise & split drive shaft gaiter

Getting a hollow thumping/groaning noise from front driverís side that seems to be getting more frequent in the last 3 weeks. Took the wheel off and inner (nearest engine) driveshaft gater has a big hole in it and is oozing grease. Mechanic replacing with used part tomorrow but even after test drive he wasnít sure this was causing the noise though he said it could be the bearings if dirt had contaminated them. It doesnít happen with any particular action, but seems to be more noticeable at below 30mph when accelerating or going over bumpy road. Doesnít happen on steering and the coil spring and shock look ok. Nothing else obviously loose or broken including the splash guard.

Any thoughts on if this is likely to be driveshaft and other possibles if not?
    Thanks in advance, Paul.

Cheers, forgot to say it has also appears to be surging slightly on changing gear, not all the time though, only a few times per trip. I imagine this might be related to the diff and therefore bad news?

Driveshaft with burst gaiter replaced, original noise still there. On the motorway on the way to the garage a new thumping noise like a burst tyre started . Turned out to be a loose wheel bearing which they've tightened, sorting this noise but not the original one. Looks like I'll keep running and see if it gets worse.
