a countrywide petrol station map & maybe an ex water board water bowser that you can fill with petrol & tow around
joking aside , you need to know the belt history & watch for oil leaks from the rocker covers , not much idea other than that .

There are quite tough I give mine a hard time and it takes it all in its stride. Get a panel filter and a decent breathing exhaust and that really helps these out alot. Fuel yes they do use it without a doubt but the six cylinder is a heavenly noise and addictive. Get the pre cat removed and it burbles and pops well.

you will often see 'mayo' in the neck of the oil filler cap, this is normal!! to cure......... you just remove the offending extension. Obviously check the coolant for signs of head gasket failure which happens occasionally. My GSI had three broken springs which I failed to spot! my gearbox has a whine in 5th. If the car has snowflakes you would be wise to check the back of the rim for cracks or repairs, however this is not easy!
Belts are very robust and never fail on their own something else fails first, ie water pump, oil seal, tensioner or guard, or a poor DIY job. better than the chain on the 2.2 imo. not sure about the pre cats, but i know the main cat removal, cat back and intake mods give a solid 20bhp gain.
