You cant have "sidelights" if its the small w5w bulb on on its own. for me side light is like the normal light as when you drive at night.

Front DRL is in the UEC
Rear DRL is in the REC.

So you have to change it both places if you want both places.

Do you recall if the front fogs dim when used as DRL's then return to full brightness if used as fogs?

Thanks Ken. Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether the configuration of having dipped beam (which I assume is Ken's explanation) on as DRL's, would be considered a "legal" use of headlights in the UK ?

Tried all 4 DRL options on mine using the program that must not be mentioned, and preface only works with DRL option 1 & 2. Tried options 3 & 4 on a friend's facelift and it uses the fogs.
On my pre facelift I can do all the DRL options with vauxcom.

Yes they do. As DRL they are slightly dimmer, and turn off when you turn sidelights on and the fogs return as normal brightness fogs operated via the stock fog switch.

Thanks again Ken, now I gotta start looking even harder for a "friend" in the Cheshire/Merseyside area with a tech2 and the "knowledge" to do a bit of experimenting with my 04 Gsi

I was always of the opinion that this could only be done on the pre facelifts but I'm happy to be proved wrong.
