Default 1.9cdti 150 not starting after alternator belt snapped

Now i know this is a vectra forum, but my mates got a astra sri with the 1.9cdti 150 engine in it. Couple of days ago it lost coolant which turned out to be the waterpump which i replaced for him. Car drove and ran well for about 100 odd miles, then the alternator belt give up and snapped.
Had the car towed home with lights on for about 40 miles or so then parked outside the house.
Fitted a new belt and idler pulley and tried to start it, but it wouldnt go. Tried a different battery and on a bump and jump, but it just wont start. It cranked over but sounded asif it's out of fuel, but got half a tank in it.
Today i go back and try to start it, but all i get is just clicking from the starter with the ignition lights going on and off whilst trying to start it.
So one day it sounds asif it's out of derv, then the next it sounds asif the starters knackerd.

Abit lost to why it wont start from a alternator belt giving up?

    Any ideas chaps?

Sorry for asking but you did set the timing correctly on the belt when you did the pump?

Clicking could be the starter but could be compression lock too if you have sucked up water or have liquid in the inlet. Way to check this is to remove and refit the glow plugs. That will remove compression in the inlet should it be there.

Worth checking that the cambelt is all ok too.

Once belt is checked - try turning the engine by hand from the crank pulley.

I marked the timing at the cam at around 1 0'clock, and refitted exectly how i removed it. Turned it over a few times and it looked good. Sterted straight up and drove fine so i guess it must have been tidy to drive and run. Although i did check earlier and with the groves at the crank lined up, the cam mark is around 3 o'clock :/

I was tempted to line it up at the crank around 25 past? then remove the belt, turn the cam to 1 o'clock and refit the belt? But thought that may **** it right up? Or would that be in my interest to try?

It's a 'mates' car so wana get it right. If it was mine i'd burn it,lol.

So with the crank pulley lined up with the marker on the grove on the outer case (about 25past ish) the cam pulley must be at the 1oclock ish mark. If its at 3oclock the timing is way out mate... The only other way that it may not line up to 1oclock is if it's 180degrees out at 25too ish and you just need to turn the crank one revolution again.

Something has moved for sure then or the belt was not tensioned correctly. Did you use a gm kit where the belt has yellow timing marks? That way you know you are on the correct teeth etc when you install the new belt.

You need to reset the belt to the correct timing and use only a gm belt with markers. I worry however that it may have bent rockers etc

When the belt broke was it a clean break or did it shred the belt - a mate of mine had one shred into boot laces which got wrapped around the timing belt crankshaft pulley and damaged the cambelt throwing it out a couple of teeth with similar problems to yours.

I thought it maybe 180 out, so turned it abit more, but they wont line up.
He reckons he was doing around 3mph, pulling into a car park and it just cut out. Didnt try to start it, just popped the bonnet and noticed the belt had snapped. Towed it home and fitted a new one, now it wont start. Yesterday it was turning over great, sounded good but asif it was out of derv. It came really close to starting a few times, just couldnt manage it.
But today, it's like a different engine.

The belt turned into shoe laces, and had one small strand around the timing belts tensioner, but that came off easy.

Sorry mate. So are u saying the alternator belt snapped or the cam/timing belt?

Eitherway the timing of the engine is out if u are lining the factory mark on the crank with the grove and the cam pulley factory mark is at 15oclock.

An alternator belt snap should not cause any starting issues.

    The alternator belt snapped.

That's why i'm stumped as to why it wont start. Had a number of alternator belts snap over the years and never had a problem starting them.

So you think it's best to retime it at 1 o'clock at the cam and 25 past at the crank and see what happens?

Defo need to set the timing correct mate.

Was it a gm belt? Did it have yellow markers on the belt?

Did you mark the correct timing mark on the cam pulley before removing the original belt? If so you have something to line up too, but really suggest you get a gm kit with belt that has set markers.
