Default Ford KA with knocking at front end

Apologies but another Ford KA related problem! Several weeks ago my wife's (2004) KA developed a noticeable clunk from the front nearside. So several weeks later and in the interests of safety thought I'd better take a look ...

Anyway after jacking the car up I can feel a noticeable amount of play when rocking the nearside front wheel from left to right. Top to bottom does nothing. There's also some play in the offside front wheel again from left to right but not as much.

Does anyone know what this could indicate ... it sure doesn't feel right. My wife assures me she's not driven up any kerbs, speed dumps, walls etc.

The tyres / wheels appear fine and the car drives in a dead straight line. All wheel nuts checked and secure as well.

Why didn't I just buy a Corsa instead?

    Thanks - J.

The coil springs are a notorious weak point - they snap........

Top mounts are also common issues apparently

If you have side to side movement but no up and down I'd be looking at the track rods and ends and the lower ball joints, also check the suspension top mounts they tend to have bundles of play in them and the front link rods

Thanks Mr Owens - I'll get a closer look at these tonight then.

Re: coil springs - yep had two original items snap since I've owned the car!

Back in the day I had a ka and it went through ball joints like they were going out of fashion. It knocked all the time. It eventually became cheaper to buy the full lower arm then the ball joint on its own... It's a very common problem.

As above - lower ball joints - done several of these- get genuine Ford ones they seem to last a bit longer
