    Default Clutch/DMF problem

    Hi everyone,

I'm not sure but maybe its on the way out. In neutral gear position when i press down the clutch fully no problem, and when i lift the clutch pedal up to biting point, car makes a funny clattering sound, press the clutch fully again, noise its gone. The car drives fine, change gears fine. Startup of the engine can be noisy at first. Any idea's?
    Car has covered 86k.

    Cheers.

That'll be the DMF. In and around your mileage is the norm I believe for them although I've heard people complain about them at 30K. Doing lots of motorway miles, I made it to 160k before I changed mine although I let it rattle away for longer than I can remember (maybe I was lucky that it didnt go into peices but it didnt)

Should be lots of info on here regarding the parts needed to change it. Clutch kit, Flywheel and Concentric Slave Cylinder. From memory cost me 550 to do (although that might be parts only)

Depends on engine size etc. My 3.0 v6 cost £520 for dmf clutch kit and csc parts and £350 to fit

6hr job. Must be cheap labour in Ireland 100 divided by 6 £16.66 per hour and presume that includes vat. Lucky guy. If you went to vx, which I did not, they would charge £540 including vat

I've just paid £960ish to have a clutch kit, slave cyclinder, DMf etc all fitted by Mr Clutch... waiting to pick it up as I type! LOL

With Mr Clutch, they give a 2 year warranty etc...

So do people definately think is the DMF playing up? How long would it last before it ceases to work and would it cause any damage to anything else apart from the clutch system.

Some people drive thousands and tens of thousands of miles without ever having a problem... but, would you want to take the risk of it breaking and destroying possibly the gear box etc? I can only afford to get it done right now due to an interest free credit card I just got LOL. Its been rumbling for around 6k miles now. I intend to keep the car for at least another 3 years (Hopefully) and although I know I'll never get the money back, its something I dont have to really worry about again during my ownership...

The noise you describe is possibly just the thrust bearing / slave cylinder... but if your going to replace that you may as-well just get the whole thing done whilst its apart.
