Default 1.9 cdti 120 - locking tool for timing belt renewal

    Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and I'm thinking of doing a DIY change of my timing belt.

I need to set the crankshaft at No. 1 TDC but i can only accurately do so with the locking tool (as advised by haynes).

I saw some previous comments on just marking it but i'm a bit cautious as i've no previous experience in a DIY timing belt change without the locking tool (plus that was on a "spacious" 1.9tdi!!)

    Any thoughts?

dont risk it, get the timing set otherwise youll regret it if you do it wrong!

Does anyone have this tool for borrowing? It'd seem a waste to buy it and just use it once. Just my opinion.

You could buy it and sell it on ebay.

Yeah, easiest option i suppose. I called a local autofactors and they quoted €150!!! They are cheaper on the web though.

    Thanks.

this is the one i got, im just gonna let it gather dust till i need to do another timing belt/water pump change! its alot cheaper than repairing a mistimed engine!

You need to set the tension on the timing belt correctly, as you have no previous experience I would suggest taking it into a competent garage.

just put a bolt in the lower timing case hole and lever with a screwdriver till the arrow lines up with the tension mark!

Timing on cdti is easy. Just make your own mark for the cam and use the stock on the crank. No tools needed.
Ive done a couple of these the last months. Just make sure you also change the waterpump.
