    Default Flexi Section

I heard a rattling coming from the exhaust yesterday, so clambered under the car to take a look and found that the bracket that holds the flexi section in place had rusted off and although still holding on to the two rubber mounts, it was banging against the exhaust pipe. A quick trip to Halfords for a universal exhaust bracket and it was secure once more.

My question though, is what is inside the flexi section? Anyone know?

Here's the pipe minus the rusty bracket:

There is nothing inside that section, its simply there to allow movement/flex in the pipe, engines rumble and shift which would get transported down the exhaust without this section causing the exhaust to bang a lot (or worse brake very quickly if you anchored it down to stop the banging). I guess you can think of it as a shock absorber for the exhaust?

I figured that it's there to allow movement, but if there's nothing in it then the gauze has to be airtight or exhaust fumes will come out. Mine isn't air tight, but there are no fumes escaping.

I've just fixed a noise coming from mine by putting on a fix that I had before but rusted off over time - put a jubilee clip around the middle of the flexi, so that it's tightish against the pipe inside it, it can still flex but stops the noise.
