    Default Knocking noise at idle

    Hi,

    I have a 2.0 DTi Signum.
Yesterday I noticed a pronounced knocking from the engine at idle. It is similar to a diesel knock but higher in pitch, more metallic and 'hollow-er'.
The sound disappears with even the slightest increase in revs and takes a second or so to re-appear when returning to idle, as if the engines vibrations set off the knocking, but its not the engine itself knocking.
It appears to be coming from the aux belt area but does not in anyway sound like a belt slipping.
I've had a very quick visual check and can't see anything loose but plan to have a better look today.
Obv a bit concerned as the timing chain is also in this area and it sounds far more likely to be chain related, then aux belt.
Has anyone heard of anything similar? Any ideas what to look at first?
    Thanks a million...

Forgot to mention, it starts very strangely now as well. Starts first time but seems to explode rather then just fire up and there is a strange noise.
A side issue that may be relevent, might not, I suspect the injector seals are leaking and have been for a while. Just thought I'd mention incase this was related.

my guess would be knackered crank pulley , it will fall off soon & then you will need to buy a new one , mine did anyway

Nice! Did it damage anything else in the engine? Would've thought that would have the same effect as timing chain breaking / jumping a tooth...dead engine.
How long did you get from noticing the rattle to pulley falling off? I had a 10 mile drive back home from when I noticed the noise and has been off the road since but I will need to drive it to a garage, the noise is much worse now then when I first heard it.
As my injector seals are leaking, I've fired the car up once each day just to keep air out the fuel system. Did yours make an awful noise when it fired up, like a sloppy engine fart...for want of a better description
I can see this being an expensive fix...

Ah, the crank shaft pulley drives the aux belt. This sounds more likely, the noise sounded like it was external to the engine, not under the timing chain cover.
Is there anyway to quickly see this pulley from above without taking the wheel and under tray off?

    Default I've found the problem!

ok, so I now know exactly what the problem is, I kinda wish I was back thinking it was a timing chain issue.

I had a had a good look at aux belt, hoping to see crank pulley when I noticed there was absolutely no tension on the belt at all. I mean, I could freely lift the belt of the alternator wheel with over an inch slack.

I took off the front wheel and undertray and could see immediately that the belt tensioner had snapped its mounting hole away from what I can only assume is the sub frame?
Does anyone know what this mounting hole is part of? I'm really hoping it is a separate bracket that bolts on somewhere. I don't have axle stands so didn't want to crawl under the car and investigate further at this stage
