    Default Dead battery ?

Hi all, just bought my vectra c 1.9 cdti 150 about a month ago, bought off my dad who had it from new,its a 2007.anyhows when i bought it it had ecu light on that was down to egr valve so cleaned it all out and all was fine, took it to devon and done over 1000 miles no probs till this evening,i left work and it started ok drove home about 6 miles no probs.when come onto my drive i turned it off but needed to move it back a bit, tried to start it but it wouldnt ! Just turns over a bit then does that click click click noise, weird when ive drove home with no troubles.noticed the green light has gone from battery top too.

Now i know it could be battery or alternator but as im a newb with vectras i wondered if theres a common fault that i should know about or any suggestions from you guys.many thanks and sorry my first post is asking for help, carl.

do you have a multimeter? if you do, get the car jump started, with the engine running pop the multimeter across the battery and measure the output, a correctly functioning alternator should give you a measurement of 14v, any higher/lower and the alternator is ******ed! failing that run the engine, turn your lights on, and give the engine a few rev, if your lights go brighter with revs applied but dim when taken off that is also an indication of your alternator being faulty. if the alternator is reading 14v or your lights are steady its your battery failing to hold its charge, they can be slow charged to full fuctionality but its usually better just to replace! hope this helps!

    Thanks for quick replys folks.
The car has done 106 k BUT almost all motorway miles and looks mint in and out ! I work in a body shop so if i can get it jumped i will get multimeter on it,does it also need amps tested on it too ? Just baffled as i have used it loads in 4 weeks and gone to devon 600 mile round trip and drove home then dies on me.weird.

Well i forgot my volt meter when i came from work today so used my jump pack, started first time, but when i rev it i get a whinning type noise from alternator area, then when i remove jump pack from terminals i get a battery light and then the steering wheel and exclamation mark in yellow even tho its still running,i fear its the alternator but will need to confirm with volts meter.any ideas where i can get a new one from thats not gonna cost the earth and is it much of a job to change ? Many thanks, carl.
