Default Winter tyres or wet weather tyres?

I've just aquired a set of pre-facelift elite alloys so that my Evo Stars can go into hibernation during the winter.

I've been looking at winter tyres but tbh are they really worth the cash? I try not to take the car out when it's been snowing although if I have the car at work and it has been snowing I have no option.

But then how often does it snow, I can't say that I had any problems last winter. Are the snow tyres any good on ice?

The other option is a set of wet weather tyres but i'm not spending a fortune on them, they will get used for about 4 months of the year and chances are that they'll need replaced due to cracking as opposed to being worn.

Anyone got any recommendations (remembering I am NOT spending a fortune)

    Tyre size is 225/45/R17

    Cheers

I had winter tyres on my vectra B last winter & they handled the rain / ice / snow etc a lot better than standard tyres , they will be going on my C this winter .
