Default Help Needed Peeps : Exhaust Emission Light has come on.

Just taken my 06 Vec 1.8 vvt to get the Hunter Alignment done on it.

On the way to the garage I notice that the exhaust emmsions light has come on (not flashing) and I have terrbible judder when pulling way and under general driving. I did go over 2000 rpm so im not sure if its in limp mode or not.

When idle the revs are going up and down from 700 to 900 rpm.

I have the (we are not to speak of it) code reader at home so I should be able to see what it brings up.

Home though is 50 miles away.

Is there anything I can do or look for when the car comes back from the garage. They don't have enough time to diagnose the fault there.

Any help would be very much apprecaited.

I jinxed myself yesterday by saying to my mate the vec is running really well with 86k on the clock. hmmmmm

Check your alternator? That could cause the hunting at tick over. You should have over 14v at tick over.

Sounds like the same issue I had with my old coupe z20let, one of the o2 sensors had packed in, all was fine after replacing it, my fuel economy dropped quite a bit before it happened and the tail pipe was getting black very quickly which was a good way of telling something was up.

Thanks mate. I suspect I will know more if I make it home tonight the get the code reader on it. 50 miles in a juddering peice of metal won't be the nicest ride home

There is a sensor in the exhaust after the flexi on the top of the pipe. Think its the Lambda sensor, check to see if its connected, wires broken etc. They are available from most exhaust repair centres.

yes, lambda / o2 sensors, there's probably 2, one on the precat and one after the main cat, think it was the pre-cat one which went on mine, cant quite remember as it was a long time ago now.

Made a phone call and have a multimeter on its way so will check the alternator first when the motor comes back with lined up wheels.

If its the o2 sensors would driving it home cause any damage. Is it wise to look for an alternative way home ? Probably a silly question.

Just bumping to know if I will be ok to drive home (50 mile journey)

    Many thanks

Edit: Oh just told the Boss that I have a problem with the vec. His reply was "well its a Vauxhall"

    I added "oh ok then"

His response to that was "oh I'll get the violin out then"

    I love working here..... hmmmm

It should be ok to drive for the 50 miles, its likely just to over fuel. I would just take it steady.
