Default Spanner light flashing this morning & LHM, then OK after 30 secs - ODD!!!

    Had this happen this morning.

Left home, all OK, got to the lights and noticed the spanner light blinking at me and no power over 3k rpm, 30 secs later it was fine again.

Im going to do a Fault Code check later and will report back but please comment on possibilities. Just a glitch I wonder?

Too many possibilities to guess , best just to get the codes read and see what comes up .

possible its just a bit of moisture - had it on a 5 series. Errors coming up occasionally (but only after there was a spell of rain & then it was warm - water vapour etc).

Happened again on way home from work yesterday, Car with spanner popped up whilst stationary in traffic, wouldnt rev over 3,5k rpm, 30 seconds later - all OK again.

Checked for trouble code this morning and only one that came was P0700 - Ambient Air Temp senosor and Alarm Circuit. Would these bring up the light?

It's quite unusual to get Safe Mode, which then clears very quickly
Normally once applied it remains in place until the engine is switched off, restarted, or having to wait some time

I had a similar problem where Safe Mode was being applied, but on switching off, waiting 5 minutes, and restarting all was well (typically once a month, but was eventually down to once a week)
No fault code could be found
This suddenly stopped, but was then replaced by the Emissions Warning Light once a fortnight
The fault code was returned as the EGR Valve, so had the dealership order me
I then replaced the Fuel Filter, and found that it looked like the previous one had not been replaced
    This issue has completely disappeared

In general, my experience and recommendation is to wait until the fault becomes more common, as erratic codes tend to be difficult to diagnose and incorrect

I suspect your issue is associated to the Air Temperature Sensor (engine)
This suggests it is nearing the end of its life
I would suggest replacing this first and then compare

The Alarm should not be activiting Safe Mode during normal driving

Thanks mate, where is the Air Temperature Sensor (engine) located?

Im very much into preventative maintenance, hence why im trying to catch IT before IT catches me. Im driving down to Southampton on Monday and maybe Isle of Wight, ill make sure I take my laptop with me!

Could it be dodgy fuel? I have been using Cheapo Asda fuel recently. I have popped in some Redex this morning to try and clear up that too.

I can't work out what type of car and engine you have, as your profile doesn't make it very clear
I know where it is on the Y30DT, but not sure on the 2.0 DTI so I am quite sure someone can advise
I would expect it to be on the nearside of the engine near to the inlet manifold

Very unlikely as fuel and air are kept separate until after the air temperature sensor
However, it wouldn't hurt to try 180 litres (three consecutive tanks) of a premium fuel
Don't bother with any fuel additives (we sell them but I don't use them)

As an aside, the air temperature sensors issue may be due to the MAF sensor nearing the end of its life
Have you driven through water / flooding recently?
If so, remove the cover to the Air Filter box and inspect it
