    Default Vectra C 1.9 CDTI Automatic Problems - Engine & Gearbox

    Hi,

    Brought a Vecci 1.9 CDTI Elite the other day, hoping to have a nice motor to creep around in, however doesn't seem like its not meant to happen.

    Any advise would be great, more positive the better!

    First issue:- When the car warms up, the gear change from 2nd to 3rd is very rough, revs freely, and then knocks into gear.

    A little bit of advise I have had, is that the gearbox oil is low, and when the cars warm, the oil thins and can cause this.

    Second issue, there is a misfire when cold on tick over, when rev'd feels like theres no power there, when warm the car drives bang on, other than the gearbox issue..

    no engine management lights, spanner etc..

    Other than that I love the car!

    You need to do the wiring loom mod, on injector number three. Sorry but the gearbox sounds like its on its way out, you could try and change the oil and putting some conditioner in it. Get it plugged in first to see if there are any fault codes regarding the box. Could be why it was for sale.

    get the gb oil topped up first, whilst that is being done, check the drive shaft seals for leaks

    run that for a bit and see how it feels

    If the gearbox oil was low it would be slow to engage gear when cold. The oil level rises when hot.

    that's not been my experience with other cars but i'll bow to experience on these.

    In other cars i've had, the gear selection has been ok when cold and once warmed up it's got a bit clunky and you can hear it rumbling if the level is a bit low

    depends on the box and oil i know

    The gear change will be better before the oil thins out HOT on a worn box.

    I'm afraid the gearbox issue with harsh changes (particularly 2nd to 3rd) is quite a common problem on these and is usually wear in the valve block inside the gearbox. The part alone costs £800 plus big labour costs. If there's any way you can get your money back I would advise you to try, however if you do keep the car you may find you can cope with driving it carefully using the manual gearchange - I drove mine like that for 40,000 miles!

    This is what i was hoping for, not worn bits as said in another post, thicker oil?

    As said when the car is cold, for a good 25 minutes the gearbox was fine!
