    Default What's my stroke length in inches?

    Hi All,

    I'm trying to work out the most efficient rate of acceleration and need to know my stroke length in inches (or centimeters and I'll convert it) for the calculation below (post from ecomodders web site...).

    I have a 52 plate 1.8 LS, can anyone tell me???

    "I have read that BMW instructs drivers to accelerate at 75% engine load and shift when the engine's mean piston speed reaches 1200-1500 feet per minute. Mean piston speed is a function of engine stroke and RPM.

    Vp=RPM*S/6

    Vp= mean piston speed
    RPM= engine speed
    S= engine stroke length, inches

    This keeps you in closed-loop operation (for EFI) at high volumetric efficiency with low frictional horsepower loss for as short a time as possible before you can achieve steady-state cruise and/or EOC. It is what I like to say is accelerating "smartly.""

    Google 'z18xe stroke length' and you get the answer 88.2mm

    It's also in your Owner's Handbook, on page 256, along with a lot more data about the engine...

    Leave the horses alone - I've told you about this before.

    Thank you Rich, very helpful, and I will furiously study page 256 when I get home this evening.

    So, if my maths is correct 1200 - 1500 feet per minute = 2073.469388 - 2591.836735 rpm, give or take the odd decimal place...

    This is quite a bit higher than I curently change gear so this should be an interesting test for the next few days.
