Default Loss of power steering.electro-hydraulic power assisted steering symbol displayed.

Started the car up this morning and had no power steering.Had a steering wheel warning symbol on instrument panel.Looked in handbook and says it indicates problem with Electro-Hydraulic Power Assisted Steering.Went out later and power steering has returned and warning light has gone out.
Anyone got any ideas what the problem may be?

Alternator on it way out most likely. Test the battery with the car running, should be between 13.5 and 14.4v.

Its Electro Hydraulic Power Steering, or Power Assisted Steering, its takes loads of Load to power it properly. Have you ever noticed at night when your stationary(with the headlights on) and turn the steering wheel and the lights and the GID dims or flicker? The Power steering does take quite a load to make it run on the Vec.

Sorry but the thread above did'nt take me anywhere.Just trying to get my head around this.So being electro-hydraulic if requires power to drive motor/pump does it and is not driven by a belt.

Yup that's pretty much spot on. Old systems were driven off the the Aux Belt that powered a pump that pumped the fluid that powered the steering. From what I can see the system is an All In One type with the pump and reservoir sitting on top of the steering rack and the pump being powered by electricity directly from the battery. BTW it may also be worth while checking the fluid level too.

yep the pump requires a 14v feed to work correctly.

If the pump and alternator check out ok, Another part that can cause issues is the angle sensor, which monitors the steering wheel position and tells the pump to speed up and provide power assistance.

There may be a fault code stored in the ecu which you can get read

Some Vecs have the PS reservoir in the inner wing, some have them on top of the steering rack behind the engine.
