Default oil catcher - is it necessary?

managed to rip half my oil catcher off last week while reversing over a collapsable bollard. Thought I'd screwed it back up, but its come undone again.

Is its sole purpose to stop oil dripping on your driveway? Because if so, I can cope with that and take the thing off completely

Its not an oil catcher mate, its only fitted to derv's to help keep the noise down for drive by noise regs from the factory, petrols dont have them fitted.

Not unless you want it to hide a nasty oil leak or split inner cv boot etc from the mot tester, no!
Seriously though, they don't really serve any purpose, they just get in the way and I never noticed a noise difference after I took it off. Mine's been stored behind the garage for the last 2 yrs and the one from my new vec will be joining it the first time I do an oil change.
