Default 7th MOT - not a lucky number!

Yep, car had it's 7th MOT just recently and for the first time ever, it failed one!

It actually wasn't a major thing. The nearside inner drive shaft gaitor had split which until recently would have been an advisory, but is now a failure. One of the number plate lights was playing up too - working when I checked them before the test but decided to not work during the test! lol The contacts of the lamp holder itself were a bit corroded so it was just easier to replace the whole lamp unit.

As I didn't have the time nor inclination to do the gaiter myself I booked it in to get it done (still had good bit of time left on the current MOT so no problem with driving it around). With the new number plate lamp it was a couple of hundred quid all in (including the original MOT fee) which wasn't too bad and no MOT retest fee either as they did the work.

Other than that the rest is tickity boo and given that it's now 9 years old and done 99000 miles that's not bad going! I've never kept a car until that sort of mileage, or age, but this car just keeps takes everything in its stride. All my photographic/lighting gear, two kids that have come along since I bought the car, trips to Ikea etc. and now towing duties! lol

When the time comes when it has to go, it'll be a sad day for sure as it's simply been just a brilliant car!

Can't complain at that, just annoying when the labour is more expensive than the bits though

Indeed. The gaitor was £20 odd and the lamp £15 or so. They did give me a reduced labour rate so I wasn't complaining. Given that it's the first time it's failed an MOT and to then get it through was less than £200 (once you take off the MOT fee) then I'm certainly not complaining!

    Good going.

Mine failed also on something that would previously have been an advisiory. Both tie rod end rubbers were perished. The tester said there was no play but had to fail on new rules. Minor I know but is quite annoying though as I had an old rover years ago whose tie rod end rubbers were perished and remained perished for 3 or 4 years but never failed as they were never bad enough to allow weather ingress and hence never had excess play.
In these days of reducing carbon footprints, to replace components earlier than needed goes against that grain.

Bit strange, our Signum has the following advisory:

Nearside inner C V boot split (same as your?)

The MOT was done 13th June and did not fail.
Lois Griffin: Peter! You're bribing your daughter with a car?
Peter Griffin: Ah, c'mon, Lois, isn't 'bribe' just another word for 'love'?

Sounds like you also have an indistructible Vectra lol...

Mine is 8 years old on 94k almost and keeps passing it MOT.... Bizarly I pulled the MOT history for the car before I got it and it failed every single year till I took ownership. Since then it just keeps passing..
