Question 3.0 V6 CDTI - trouble starting and then struggling to pass 2000rpm for first five minutes.

    Hi All,

I've had this problem for a couple of days following a very long drive and was wondering if anyone might know what I should be looking at fixing / replacing (or getting fixed, since I've gone and left all of my tools in storage in the UK ). I've had a look online and on the forum but can't seem to find a definitive answer to what it could be.

In the mornings it usually takes two attempts (three yesterday when it rained overnight, just one this morning after a warm night) to get the motor started, and then it idles at around 900rpm. When I move off, the car spends the first five minutes limiting itself to 2000rpm until the engine warms up. After that it returns to its usual smooth running. If I give the accelerator a bit of a push during the first five minutes it'll reluctantly break through the 2000 barrier and gradually move up through the revs (not very smoothly), but if I move up a gear it'll limit itself again. Luckily the start of my route to work is fairly sedate so I'm not getting in anyone's way but it's very annoying nonetheless. There's no smoke, warning lights or unusual noises.

I can then leave the car outside work all day in relative warmth (compared to night time) and it'll start first time every time for the journey home, with no rev limiting in sight.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,

    Alan

Sounds like the engine is entering Safe Mode, but not notifying you
Is the vehicle warning system, in the Rev Counter, working? (you can test this by opening a door)
Is the Emissions warning light coming on during start up, this is the yellow one directly beside the Fuel tank warning? (it should come on, but switch off when you start the engine)

Otherwise it sounds like normal cold starting, with slightly raised idle revs and controlled revs, until warm
How old is the fuel filter?
    When was it last replaced?

Does this issue happen all the time, or is it erratic?
When it does happen, can you hear the turbo activate?

    Thanks for the comprehensive reply!

I'll get this printed off and double-check everything tomorrow morning when the symptoms return.

    - The Vehicle Warning System is working, I remember seeing the boot light come on yesterday when the girlfriend was getting her bag. I'll double-check it's also working when the engine's stuggling but presumably it will be.

    - If the Emissions Warning Light is the one that looks like an engine then I'm pretty sure it made it's usual brief appearance this morning when I started the car. Once again I'll double-check.

    - The car's never had trouble starting or getting going before (other than due to a flat battery). Even in December 2010 when I was working in the Scottish Borders it started first time each time after spending the day / night parked in -15 to -20° temperatures.

    - Now that you mention it, the fuel filter hasn't been changed for quite a while. The car was SORN for a year while I had a company car with my last job, reckon that could be it?

    - It happens systematically when the car's cold, it usually happens first thing in the morning but it's also happened on one occasion last week when it was parked in the rain all day. Whenever it's been in relative warmth it starts and runs fine straight away.i.e after it's been left overnight or after a daywhen it had been raining all day so the car was cooler than the other days when it's been relatively warm (I'm in France).

    - The turbo works fine once the engine's warmed up, heard it whine this morning. I'll check tomorrow to see if it's working straight away though (I really hope it's not the Turbo...)

    Cheers,

    Alan

Check previous receipts to see when the Fuel Filter was replaced
Already well documented now the discrepancy between the service interals (up to 30K miles / 2 years) and the short life span of the Fuel Filter
Replace the Fuel Filter at 10K miles / 6 months

Equally, if the car as not been used for 12 months then there could be all manner of problems / issues
The engine also has a learning setting, so may be being over cautious at low revs if you have just recently started using it again

Personally, after not using the car for 12 months, either carry out a service prior to this or immediately afterwards

Don't worry about the turbo, if you can hear it sometimes
When Safe Mode is applied the turbo is switched off (to protect it)

However even with a cold engine you should be able to freely pass up to 4K revs, obviously it is easier once the engine is warm

Finally, what level is the oil at (when the engine is warm) and what condition is it in?

Glow plugs. Are you letting light go out or just turning key straight away?

Is battery ok? Starter turning at full speed?

Discussed previously, handbook advises always to start straight away, but you can wait for it to go out
I've never noticed any difference, under any conditions

Why would the book advise to start straight away.

The whole point. Is to pre heat the combustion chamber.

Discussed before, that's what it states
Pre-heat is not required on a common rail diesel
If it is too cold the glowplugs will stay active, allowing engine start

Typically, I went to start the car at 8.30 this morning to check all of the above points and it started first time with all indicator lights displaying correctly and full revs as soon as I pulled away... The dash indicated the external temperature was 16°, it's definitely related to how warm the car is when I first start it.

Oil was replaced recently and is still just under the Max marker, the car was given a bit of a service after the 12 months off the road and has been running happily since February. I'll replace the fuel filter and report back

    Cheers,

    Alan
