crude method is a bit of paper between that and another surface (ie radiator) and drive around the block, when you return remove paper and look for oil marks on it

I've heard of people using smoke to look for leaks. I just took mine off, turned it upside down and filled it with a litre of cheap break cleaner - found a crack at the top of one of the plastic ends.
It's pretty easy to remove the intercooler, at least on our Vectra anyway. Just jacked up the front wheels, removed the front bumper/panel, disconnected the intercooler rubber connecting hoses and a few connecting screws/brackets and it dropped down and slid it sideways.
Needed new plastic rivets to re-attach the bumper to the underneath though - chewed them up trying to remove them.

Vehicle : Mk1 renault scenic... I know I know but it drives

Smoke test is quickest an easiest way.

But not cheap so best going to a garage.

Home made kits can be made but not sure how good they'll be
