Default New DMF faulty? Claim for fitting costs?

I bought a new LUK clutch kit and LUK DMF for my 1.9 Z19DT vectra online last week due to my old DMF starting to rattle excessively and paid a local garage to fit them 2 days ago. The garage fitter told me when I picked the car up that there was a bit of play in the new DMF which my mate could hear today when I was pressing the clutch. My mate advised me that he wouldn't be happy with it if it was his car and I should change it under warranty. I will try and get another opinion from a different garage in a day or two to confirm his opinion but meantime I was wondering if the DMF is faulty will I be able to claim the labour costs involved as it will have to be removed and then a new one refitted?

If you ordered on-line are you certain that they sent the right parts? It has been known for people to receive the wrong parts quite often. Especially when there may be many variants. Was a nightmare getting the same parts for mine.

Yes the parts are definitely spot on. I researched the manufacturer's website and checked them upon delivery.

In that case I would think that if you get a report from another garage confirming that the part supplied was faulty then you should contact LUK. Send them a copy of the report and inform them that you want to be reimbursed for any additional charges incurred.

So would I start a claim as you suggest with LUK or should I first contact the online retailer that I purchased them from?

It may be worthwhile contacting LUK to make them aware but I would imagine you would need to go through the online retailer who you purchased them from first. No doubt they will tell you to contact LUK. LUK would no doubt dispute this and would want confirmation of your vehicle details and that you did actually order the right part. Lots of places I tried including LUK were advertising the parts for mine as being in stock but when I gave them the details of my car there were none in the UK.

Thanks for your advice John. I will get an independent opinion from a Vaux fitter that I've had dealings with first and then take it from there.

some play is acceptable, it can vary between vehicles. if the fitter thought there was a problem with the parts, he should have contacted you before fitting them. typically a dmf will rotate left to right 4-5 teeth and rock in and out about 1mm

Phew, thanks Andy, that's starting to make me look on the bright side. I'll have someone to take a gander at it tomorrow.
