Default Spanner light.....outside air temp sensor?

Today i had done around 6 miles when the spanner light came on briefly ( Less than 2 seconds). It was a warm day around here & the outside temp showed as 19 degrees. The engine temp was just below its normal operating temp at 80 degrees.

Spanner light didn't come back on again throughout the journey & on way back home.

Put it on scanner when i got home & the fault code was ...........

"B0173 - Outside Temperature Sensor Circuit Open or High Voltage
    (05) - Not present"

Cleaned the multi plug connector to the sensor & the connector at the other end near the fog light area. Cleared the fault code & it didn't reappear after a few restarts. So it could have been a crugged up terminal on the connectors.......didn't look to bad though.

Does the outside air temp sensor have any influence on the management of the engine\fuel system, etc?

Its an 04 reg 2 litre DTI (pre facelift)

    Thank you.

Yes, I think it needs to know the temp so the ecu can account for the air density.

Nothing to worry about according to the handbook.

"If it illuminates briefly, but does not recur, it is of no significance."

Thanks to all. The reason i asked was because of a strange noise that the car has had since i bought it in autumn 2010. This is a bit long winded so please bear with me.

Right, i live on a bank facing downwards that has a junction around 300 yards from where i park. From cold, when i set off, i start her up & always coast down the bank to the give way junction.(I feel this gives the oil time to circulate around the turbo before driving it like you normally would). Set off & go through the gears up to 3rd gear where there is a bank that i climb in 3rd. This is where it gets strange........once the rev counter gets to 1600 rpm there is a noise that sounds like an old diesel tractor (Not a rattle, but more of a "pinking" type of noise. If i ease the throttle off just a fraction so the rev counter is just below 1600rpm, the noise goes away..............give it a little more throttle & the noise comes back. Sounds a bit daft, but its almost as if there was a "rattle switch" that is actuated at a certain throttle position which causes the rattle noise!!

Now when it is a really hot day & the outside temp sensor shows above 21 degress, the noise thing described above doesnt happen. It also does not happen when the engine is up to operating temp.

I renewed the coolant temp sensor as a matter of course about 9 months ago. Swirl flaps & inlet manifold have been stripped down & decoked last year, egr cleaned a few times & boost sensor etc (all the usual stuff). Also all vac pipes have been changed to the silicon stuff.

I have only heard of 2 other owners have this strange noise, but not heard a mention of what caused it, etc.

If anyone can cast any light on this there will be a huge check on the way when i win this weeks lottery.
