Default Clackerty noise from cambelt cover

Any ideas? Answers on a postcard. Lucky dip until I get the official verdict tomorrow.

Makes a terrible noise at idle, but disappears at about 2000rpm unless the engine is engaged, then you can still hear it. Drives fine though so far.

Had a new alternator 3 weeks ago, new condensor 4 weeks ago, new cambelt 18 months ago. Don't know if any of the recent work could be a contributory factor. Sounds like a loose pulley to me. The breakdown guy last night thought the cambelt was a bit loose.

The car's currently at a breakdown place. They're going to 'strip it down' and get back to me tomorrow with a diagnosis...

    Heres comes another big bill...

It is the 150 CDTi. I'm not sure whether they did the water pump or not. Is this not standard procedure when changing the cambelt? It was a VX garage. I have a suspicion they didn't...

Had the cambelt done at 100k 18 months ago and I'm now at 132K. Interesting read. If it is the water pump then looks like I may have just saved myself short of a catastrophe.

I didn't notice the temperature gauge as I stopped the car as soon as I heard the noise more or less. I don't think it was especially high.

No, car drove fine - no problem whatsoever, no lights on dash, no loss of performance or anything, but when I slowed down to stop and opened the window to talk to someone I could hear it coming from the car. That was from a 6 mile (10 minute drive) so it had literally just happened. I drove about another 10 miles and then called the AA.
