Default tailgate light cluster not working on o/s

I noticed that my o/s rear light cluster on the taiilgate of my estate vecy is not working.
There is signs of some diy wiring from the regplate light going up over the roof lining.
i did notice that the small plus that attach to the cluster only had 3 wires, whilst the correctly working one has 4 wires. see pics

its the wire that should be marked "1" that is "missing"
am I jumping to conclusions that this is the source of my problems?
anyone know what this wire should be?
    thanks guys

The extra wire should be on the O/S, it is for the rear fog light (in the UK, a fog light is only required on the O/S) the 3 wire one should be on the N/S.

The first thing is to check the bulbs.
Then the earth connections, on the bulbs and the connector, the brown wire is earth. Any loose brown wires in the area should probably be connected to earth/car body.

cheers for the reply. The bulbs are fine, i swapped them out on the other side, its like the whole cluster is dead. there is some diy wiring from the numberplate light and a large cluster of brown (earth) wirings that were taped up, ill take a look at these and make sure they are grounded properly.
i think i have my o/s and n/s's the wrong way round also! the three wires are on the passenger side.

Well the only 'common' thing is the earth wire, so it's worth undoing the taped up wiring. Good luck getting it sorted.

I've just had rear light problems and thanks to a member on here I found out it was the rec unit in the boot. I got an eBay replacement and had it coded to the car and my lights now work as they should.

i have traced the diy wiring and its for a parking sensor that is not working, im guessing this was at some point wired into the reverse light. the plot thickes!

    FIXED!!
    fyi
there was a blackening on the light cluster where one connection of one bulb sat, bulb was fine but it was just a case of giving the metal a scrap to show some fresh surface for it to contact with. after that all works fine. thanks for the suggestions guys and for the replys
