Default Impossible situation - SORN' ing a car

I have a car that I am trying to sell on behalf of an elderly relative. The car is taxed and mot'd until April next year and is insured although this runs out in the next few days. It will cost the relative £100 to re - insure it for another month which obviously he doesn't want to do. We have it advertised with the tax included in the price but after a month have had no takers. I have phoned DVLA to see what I have to do about SORN'ing it without surrendering the tax. They tell me that I can't do that and if I Sorn it I have to return the tax disc and take a refund. I have comprehensive insurance myself that covers me to drive any vehicle not belonging to me but DVLA say that there has to be cover on the vehicle by the owner for the car to be insured. My question to DVLA was how do I sell a car if it is SORNed - if I can't give the prospective buyer a test ride/drive as it isn't taxed and can't go on the road as it is SORNed.

i learnt something new it might be worth you lowering your price for a quick sale as it wont be worth as much anyway when sorn with no tax

Appreciate that - its advertised now at a grand less than similar ones - and anyone wanting to buy will want a ride/drive in it - I suppose we will have to reinsure it again and cut our loses

The car dosnt have to be insured whilst it' sorn'd if it's in a garage or on the driveway only if it's parked on the road

The law changed last year - there's now the "continuous insurance enforcement law" - either it's insured or it has to be SORN as proof that it's never driven on the road.

    Put it simply, you can't.

SORN means it's off the road, so to let people test drive on the road it you'll need to get it taxed and insured.
