Default Brother in laws dog got hit and driver drove off as we watched!!

    Hi,

My brother in law was round our house and when he popped out to get something from his car the door didn't shut and the dog ran out, he tried to grab the dog but unfortunately the dog ran onto the road and got hit by a car, the dog bounced off the car so didn't get ran over but the driver stopped then wheel span away!! Lucky the dog seems ok and Is not in pain or hobbling but he is taking the dog to the vet to get him checked over just in case!
I got the reg of the car and he is going to report it to the police, as it we believe it's against the law not to stop? What are people's thoughts on this or has anyone else experienced this as reading up on this it could be his fault as dog was not on a leash although he just ran out. But if the owner got out asking if the dog was ok then that would of been fine and nothing more of it would of happened, but it's just the fact she sped off like that not caring!

its a reportable accident - ie the driver is obliged to stop and report it to the Police and he commits an offence if he doesn't

Id agree with marc, sounds like he had a reason to not stop, as your brother in law would be liable for any damage to the persons car. I suppose technically it was an accident and the driver should report it within 24 hours. I would report him to the police, see what they say tbh.

as above, sounds awful, but i think cats are classed as vermin if this happens, i personally would still stop if possible, either to put it out of its misery, or take it to a vet. hate animal cruelty,

    2 things here guys

failing to stop at an accident
    failing to report an accident

both are offences as ive got to go cort of someone hitting my van because they didnt stop and luckily for me an off duty traffic officer saw it happen they are going to prosecute him for the ones mentioned and driving with undue care and attention (serves him right)

If I remember correctly you are supposed to have a licence for a dog but not a cat so yes. A motorist has to report it to the Police.

Dog licences were withdrawn about 20 years ago, sure they were 29 1/2p.
