    Default A/C starting to fail

Started the car tonight with heated seats & A/C recycle on. Laughing at all these other people in new cars wiping the windows etc. (do they ever use AC) my car hadn't even misted up as I had A/C on before I got out of it. After about 4 miles it started steaming up very quickly and smelling a bit stale as if I had switched the A/C off and left recycle on Now it was obvious that the A/C was not working although the light was still on so why? Stopping the car and pressing the button off/on I could hear the clutch kick in and things started working again but not for long. Gas level or worse?

    Cheers

1st port of call is an AC engineer to get the gas pressure read.. thats the only way to know if it's going out on it's low pressure switch..it's the most common cause of failure.

Sounds like the perfect answer as after a while she will switch back on and then fail.

Will I cause damage if I wait a while as Christmas has sucked the notes clean from my wallet.

    Cheers for speedy reply

no you won't cause more damage.. it just won't work as the system will know if it's low on gas.. keep the AC switched off until it's been checked out..

Noticed a flyer stating free AC inspection which is great but.. if it is only the gas would around £60-70 be the norm or can I (I already know the answer) spray the stuff of ebay in?

Just that the dollars are real low and I use A/C winter/summer so that every windows is clear.

the e-bay stuff is okay for a topup, but what you don't know is how much is already left in there...and don't forget there is a leak that will need sorting out..just don't run the AC then get it seen properly when you can raise the dosh...

if you want to try a can, then it's up to you..but it will be a short term fix..

If it's the normal AC system and not climate control, it doesn't work under about 5C ambient temperature IIRC. Also, the misting up sounds a lot like a damp pollen filter well, it was when I had a similar problem.

Its not the pollen filter but I thought the AC would still remove the moisture from the air below 5C, just that my Vectra B never failed to de-mist @ any outside temperature with recycle on and the vent never set to window (face floor).

    Cheers

Under 5°C it doesn't cool but it would still dry the air... other option is that the AC waits to blow air untill the engine is warm enough... but if it started later on and stopped again, I would follow Gsi3.2's advice
